How To Make Herbal Salts And Sugars

Herbal salts and sugars are very handy things to have around. They store very well and they have lots of fun and interesting uses. You can use herbal salts and sugars as a natural exfoliant in a bath or in the shower that will help slough off dead skin cells and keep your skin healthy as well as giving it a lovely glow. You can also use them simply to give a warm bath a nice fragrance and some healing properties from the herbs. Herbal salts and sugars are even something you can simply display in a bathroom to keep it smelling nice and as a decor item. These work wonderfully as gifts and most people love to receive them especially when they are home made and packaged in beautiful little jars or containers and perhaps even paired with other bath items of a similar fragrance or color.

Making herbal salts or sugars is also a very simple and quick process so you don’t have to worry about investing a lot of time or money into these projects which makes them inexpensive gifts or fun party favors. The first thing that you’ll want to do is get about a cup of chopped fresh herb leaves of your choice. Use something that smells good to you and that will work effectively with your salts or sugars for the type of results you want. Then you’ll want to add a cup of sea salt (that hasn’t been iodized) or natural cane sugar to the leaves. Crush it together with a mortar and pestle or let your blender have a go at it for five minutes or so. Once that’s done lay your mixture out on a cookie sheet and place it in the oven at two hundred degrees for anywhere between forty-five minutes to an hour. Stir it often to prevent clumps from forming. Once it’s done take it out of the oven and let it cool completely before handling it or trying to package it. Then find some pretty, decorative jars to place your salt or sugar mixture in and seal it. You can add essential oils at this point too if you want to give it an extra scents. Make sure that you store this jar away from sunlight and moisture as well to keep it fresh and lasting a long time. It can also be nice to add some dried flowers to your salt or sugar mixture as well to give it a little texture and contrast. You can even use pre-colored salt which has a bit of a dye added to it that can turn your salt to different colors like a pink or a yellow color to make it match your herbs better and look a little bit more fancy.

You can also make these look extra special by finding a glass jar that you can see the salt or sugar through and tie some ribbon around it and maybe a handmade card that explains what herbs have been used to make it and who it’s from. Little things like these can turn some home made herbal salts or sugars into a really touching and thoughtful gift. Have some fun making different combinations and giving them to friends and family and before long you’ll be an expert at it. Don’t forget to include other fun crafts like soap, lotions, shampoo and the like!
