Herbal Lotion
Herbal lotions are a little more difficult to make than a soap or a shampoo but they have tons of benefits if you go about it the right way. Our skin is a protective barrier but it still absorbs lots of what we put on it which is why it’s so important to only put things on your skin that are good for it. Lots of commercial lotions have chemicals and all kinds of synthetic stuff in them that can be very dangerous for you if you absorb too much of them which is why so many people are turning towards more natural solutions to take care of their skin needs instead of using a bunch of fake products. There can also be other issues that encourage people to use more natural products as well. Some people don’t like that products are tested on animals, others are vegan or have unique lifestyles that prevent them from using certain kinds of lotions and others still may have very sensitive skin or skin allergies that can make it difficult to use commercial lotions and soaps. That’s what it can be so hand to now how to make your own lotion right from home. Another great thing about making your own lotion is that not only do you know exactly what is going into it you can control what you’re putting in and choose herbs and essential oils that work the very best for you. If you have certain skin conditions or specific needs from a lotion you can choose herbs that will support those needs the very best without having any of the other chemicals and stuff in there that you don’t want. It’s a pretty good way of going about it. Take a little time to do some research and find out what herbs will work the very best for you and then get some of those and get ready to make your own lotion!
The first thing that you’ll need to do is get at least a full ounce of the herbs you want to put in your lotion and make sure that they are thoroughly crushed. If you use flowers make sure that you don’t use the leaves. Add one cup of water to them. Pour the mixture into a ceramic pot and cover it, bringing it slowly to a boil. If you have flowers mixed in then make sure that it boils very gently. Let it simmer for about three minutes and then remove it from the heat and let it cool. Steep the herbs for ten or fifteen minutes and then strain the water and put it in the fridge for at least two hours. Melt an ounce of cocoa butter in a double boiler and add three ounces of fruit oil or vegetable oil, whisk it very well and remove it from the heat. Whisk in two ounces of the herb water. After that you’ll want to let your lotion set for a bit and then whisk it again thoroughly before you put it in a bottle or a jar.
You can give your lotion away as a gift if you want to and put it in cute jars with pretty labels and that makes for a great present especially if you pair it with a soap or a shampoo or something along those lines. Its a good idea to list the ingredients on the labels though just so that you can make sure you don’t give someone something that they might end up being allergic to which could end up badly if the person doesn’t realize it. This also applies to lotion you make for yourself as well because you never know how your skin might react to something so make sure to test the lotion on a small part of your skin before using it all over your body.
Overall lotions with herbs in them are a really fun way to create a gift or something special to use at home and they aren’t too complex or time consuming but they certainly make for wonderful presents and great things to have around your home. Pick some good herbs out, gather your materials, and get started making your own lotions!
