Creating Herb Sachets

Sachets are a great way to keep the wonderful scents of your garden with you for a lot longer and they are extremely easy to make. Sachets are wonderful for freshening up bathrooms, linen cupboards or closets, drawers, attics, and other places like that. You can toss them in a dryer with your clothes, tuck them between freshly laundered towels, or even put them under a pillow for a nice helpful way to get to sleep faster. These are also great gifts and go very will in a gift basket with other home made herbal products such as soap, lotion, shampoo, and other lovely gifts. You can make these pretty sachets in less than an hour and give them to family and friends or you can spend some extra time on them personalizing them to give away or to keep all to yourself.

The first thing you’ll want to do is select a fabric that will work well for a sachet. Material that has a slightly more open weave to it is best because it will release the scent of your herbs and flowers more easily. My favorite one to use is cross-stitching fabric because it allows you put fun patterns, string ribbon on it, easily sew it up, and do a lot of creative things to make your sachets prettier and more unique. If you’re a fan of cross-stitching you can even stitch a fun patter or word on each of your sachet to let you know which one is which. I usually find a design that shows what I’m putting in it, like a pretty lavender patter if I’m using lavender in the sachet or roses if I’m putting rose petals in.

Once you’ve found your fabric you’ll want to either sew or glue three sides of it together leaving the fourth side open so that you can fit your herbs in there. I like to stitch the sides together using colorful ribbon or string but if you want to glue yours you certainly can - I would recommend a hot glue gun for this job - you certainly don’t want your bag coming apart in the dryer or spilling out onto the floor do you? Make sure that all the sides and the corners are thoroughly sealed so that you don’t have to worry about them coming apart at any point.

Next you’ll want to choose the herbs you’re putting into your bag. Particularly sweet and fragrant ones are best such as lavender, lilac, mint, rosemary, roses, geraniums, and so forth. If you have favorites mix those in there as well. Don’t worry about how pretty your mixture looks - it’s all about the smell with this one. Mix them up and if you want you can add some essential oils to enhance the scent of your bag. Fill your bag up with the flowers and herbs and then carefully glue or sew it together. You can tie the ends with ribbon or string if you’d like to so that you can refresh your herbs or replace them after they don’t smell as good any longer. Rubbing the bag gently should crush the herbs a bit and help them release their fragrances.

You can turn this into a great gift by pairing it with other herbal products, especially ones with matching scents, as well as doing things like adding fun decorations to it and even using specially picked out fabric to make it more festive or interesting. Get creative with your sachets and have fun!
